History
John Neely Bryan first surveyed Dallas and the area in 1839. He was looking for a good place for a trading post to serve both Native Americans and settlers, sharingSam Houston’s insight into Native American customs and knew that the planned Preston Trail was near to the Trinity floodplain (the north-south route and the ford at Bryan’s Bluff became even more important when the U.S. annexed Texas in 1845.)
Returning home to Arkansas, while he was gone a treaty was signed, removing the Native Americans and when he came back in 1841, half of his customers had vanished. Bryan changed his mind about the trading post, instead creating a permanent settlement, which he founded in 1841. Named Dallas after George M. Dallas, in 1856, it was granted a town charter and by 1860, and the town’s population had reached 678. The major north-south (Houston and Texas Central Railroad) and east-west ( Texas and Pacific Railway) met in Dallas in 1873, making its destiny as a center of commercial endeavors relatively assured. Trains also meant soaring population and the fall of 1872, the residents had grown to 7000. For more on the history of Dallas, visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Dallas
