Home to many cultural institutions that attract more than seven million visitors a year, Houston has a world class performing arts scene and is one of the few cities that offer residents companies that perform year round. With a broad industrial base in energy, manufacturing and aeronautics, just to mention a few, Houston offers a wide range of opportunity for new residents and a multitude of visitor recreation. Come visit us today, take a look around and see all that Houston has to offer, you’ll love it!

History

Founded by brothers August and John Allen and named after Sam Houston, the city began its life in 1836 just 25 miles from where the Battle of San Jacinto was fought and incorporated in 1837. The blossoming port and railroad industries, combined with the discovery of oil in 1901, made Houston a continually thriving, growing city with no end to the possibilities in sight. By the mid 20 th century, the Texas Medical Center came into being, the world’s largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions and of course, NASA’s Johnson Space Center is located there, the home of the Mission Control Center.
